Pronouns are words used to replace a noun. We all use them every day: in fact, I’ve used them three times in this sentence! Pronouns are not only used by trans people — you use them too. Some common pronouns include:
- He/Him/His
- She/Her/Hers
- They/Them/Theirs
- It/Its
- Fae/Faer/Faers
- Xe/Xem/Xyr
- Etc.
Neopronouns are used the same as any other type of pronoun… and they are completely valid and normal. They can be confusing to learn at first, but they are an important part of many people’s identities — that’s worth learning a new word for.
Intentionally not using someone’s pronouns is disrespectful of their identity. That is called misgendering (and calling a trans person “they” who doesn’t use they/them pronouns is still misgendering — many people will do that to avoid using someone’s pronouns).
But what if you don’t know someone’s pronouns? Well, it’s always okay to ask! Saying “What are your pronouns?” isn’t considered offensive, and is much preferred over assuming them. Even introducing yourself with your pronouns (“Hi, my name is Anne, and my pronouns are she/her/hers.”) can create a safe space where trans people feel comfortable to stand up for themselves when they’ve been misgendered.
